Saint Titus was an early Christian missionary and church leader, a companion, and disciple of Paul the Apostle mentioned in several of the Pauline epistles including the Epistle to Titus. He is believed to be a Gentile converted to Christianity by Paul and, according to tradition, he was consecrated as Bishop of the Island of Crete.

Titus brought a fundraising letter from Paul to Corinth, to collect for the poor in Jerusalem. Later, on Crete, Titus appointed presbyters (elders) in every city and remained there into his old age, dying in Gortyna, near the city of Candia (modern Heraklion).

St. Paul spoke with great affection and respect for St. Titus. He addressed him as a “true child of mine in the faith that we share,” suggesting that he had personally recruited Titus for Christ (see Titus 1:14). So Titus became one of Paul’s most trusted colleagues, serving as his secretary, traveling companion, and ambassador. He accompanied Paul at the Council of Jerusalem that decided not to require circumcision of Jewish converts. To strengthen his case that gentile Christians need not become Jews first, Paul had refused to circumcise Titus, who was Greek.

When Paul discovered the sex scandal and subsequent dissension at Corinth, he sent Titus to deal with the situation. Apparently a gifted pastoral leader, he successfully brought the community through its ordeal. Afterward, Paul told the Corinthians of Titus’s affection for them that was “all the stronger when he remembers how obedient you have all been, and how you welcomed him with fear and trembling” (2 Corinthians 7:15 NJB).

Paul appointed Titus the first bishop of Crete, assigning him to consolidate the church thereby appointing elders in every town. Paul had a low regard for Cretans and accepted a popular view that generally, they were “liars, dangerous animals, all greed and laziness” (Titus 1:12 NJB). So he gave Titus explicit instructions to take a firm stance with Cretan believers:

Remind them to be obedient to the officials in authority; to be ready to do good at every opportunity; not to go slandering other people but to be peaceable and gentle, and always polite to people of all kinds. There was a time when we too were ignorant, disobedient and misled and enslaved by different passions and dissipations; we lived then in wickedness and malice, hating each other and hateful ourselves. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior for humanity were revealed, it was not because of any upright actions we had done ourselves; it was for no reason except his own faithful love that he saved us, by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and renewal in the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our Savior; so that, justified by his grace, we should become heirs in hope of eternal life.

This is the doctrine that you can rely on. I want you to be quite uncompromising in teaching all this, so that those who now believe in God may keep their minds constantly occupied in doing good works. All this is good, and useful for everybody. But avoid foolish speculations, and those genealogies, and the quibbles and disputes about the Law—they are useless and futile. If someone disputes what you teach, then after a first and a second warning, have no more to do with him: you will know that anyone of that sort is warped and is self-condemned as a sinner (Titus 3:1–11 NJB).

After many years of service-leadership, Titus died peacefully in Crete.

Paul depicted Titus in his specifications for the character of an elder: “a man of irreproachable character, never arrogant or hot-tempered, nor a heavy drinker or violent, nor avaricious; but hospitable and a lover of goodness; sensible, upright, devout and self-controlled; and he must have a firm grasp of the unchanging message of the tradition” (Titus 1:6–9 NJB).

Timothy, meaning "honoring God" or "honored by God" was an early Christian evangelist and the first first-century Christian bishop of Ephesus, whose tradition relates to died around the year AD 97.

Timothy was from the Lycaonian city of Lystra in Asia Minor, born of a Jewish mother who had become a Christian believer, and a Greek father. The Apostle Paul met him during his second missionary journey and he became Paul’s companion and co-worker along with Silas. The New Testament indicates that Timothy traveled with Saint Paul, who was also his mentor. Paul entrusted him with important assignments. He is addressed as the recipient of the First and Second Epistles to Timothy.

Eventually St. Paul made Timothy the first Bishop of Ephesus in order to govern that church. It was there that he received the two Epistles by St. Paul, one written from Macedonia and the second from Rome, to direct him in his pastoral needs.

Timothy could not bear that the people of Ephesus offered the devils that inhabited the idols a sacrifice due only to God. On a feast day of the goddess Diana, he entered into the crowd who were worshipping the goddess and exhorted the people to renounce their idolatry and embrace Jesus Christ. Infuriated, the people turned on him and stoned him. The Christians of the city transported him half-dead to a mountain, where he expired.

Catherine Emmerick adds to these data that Timothy was tall, thin, and pale with dark hair; he was greatly loved by the Catholics. In Ephesus, he fought relentlessly against the disordered revelries and orgies that took place often to celebrate the idols. This was the cause of his death.

Comments:
The first thing that catches one’s attention in this description is the courage of St. Timothy.

The temple of Diana in Ephesus was one of the most famous monuments of antiquity. It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. I have seen reproductions of this temple and it was, indeed, very beautiful. It was an enormous temple constructed of white marble that sat atop an ensemble of monumental stairs surrounding the edifice. The ceiling was very high and in proportion to the other parts of the building.

A large statue of Diana stood within. Today some art critics complain that its architecture was not purely Greek in style, but was mixed with some Eastern elements. I don’t see that this detracts from its great beauty.

The goddess Diana, or better said, the devil that possessed the idol, worked all kinds of extraordinary acts and marvelous phenomena to impress the people of Ephesus, which helped to spread Diana’s fame and sustain the popularity of idolatry.

By going to the temple and trying to stop the worship there, St. Timothy manifested an act of extraordinary courage and a remarkable capacity to face the enemy. Because of this, he was stoned and died.

Facing evil and error head-on, he took a position of frontal and public attack, with full knowledge of all the inconveniences that could follow, as in fact, they did. He did not care about these consequences; he chose to immolate himself for the glory of God by dying in this way.

Should we always face the enemy in a frontal attack? Or should we at times take this tactic, and at other times face the enemy with astuteness, maneuvering to lead him into a trap, and then win the battle?

Many times, in the life of the saints, they have a divine inspiration to act in an extraordinary way. Their actions are certainly meant to inspire us and to be admired, but not necessarily to be imitated.

For example, consider the famous case of St. Francis of Assisi quarreling with his father, Pietro di Bernardone. His father opposed the decision of Francis to dedicate his life to religion. He argued that everything Francis had was due to his work and efforts and therefore, Francis was obliged to his advice. Even the clothing Francis was wearing was owed to him, Bernardone argued. In response, St. Francis took off his fine garments and told his father “Take your clothes, then. I will go without them … ” And he went away almost naked.

This episode does not mean that every person who fights with his father or mother for similar reasons should take off his clothes and walk away nude. It is an episode that should inspire us to maintain the ideal of the vocation God gave us, even when our families or friends oppose it. We should be inspired to have a similar strength, not to repeat the same action.

So, regarding the episode of St. Timothy, it should inspire us to be as audacious as possible against our enemies. It is an invitation to never step back from our enemies. In this sense it could very well be seen as an inspiration for the vow of the Templar knights: To never retreat in battle. It is also an inspiration for all who combat for the Faith to never make any concession to the evil, even when it gives us prestige, fame or popularity. We should face the evil and fight to destroy it – with the price of our lives, if necessary. We can be sure that Our Lord will reward us for that, as he rewarded St. Timothy, giving him the honor and veneration of all Catholics throughout the centuries in History, and more than that, eternal glory in Heaven.

Notwithstanding this lesson and inspiration from the last combat of St. Timothy, sometimes in our fight, we need to use other methods, depending on the circumstances. At times, we should imitate the audacity of St. Timothy walking straight up to the idol and trying to destroy it and drive away from its audience. At other times, we have to wait for the right moment to come and then attack.

Let us ask St. Timothy to give us audacity when it is for the greater glory of God, and also discernment to know when to use this audacity and when to use prudence in order to take and destroy the enemy later.

(Apostle to Antioch and Cyprus)

✠ Conversion of Paul the Apostle ✠

Feast: January 25

The conversion of Paul the Apostle, was, according to the New Testament, an event in the life of Paul the Apostle that led him to cease persecuting early Christians and to become a follower of Jesus. It is normally dated to AD 33–36. Since his birth is estimated at 5 A.D., he would have been somewhere around the age of 28-31 at his conversion. The phrases Pauline conversion, Damascene conversion, and Damascus Christophany, and the road to Damascus allude to this event.

Excerpts from the 2nd Epistle to Timothy:

“Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned (3:14).

“I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: Preach the word, be instant in season, out of season, reprove, entreat, rebuke with all patience and doctrine.

“For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears:
“And will turn away indeed their hearing from the truth but will be turned to fables.

“But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober.
“For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
“For the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just judge, will render to me on that day: and not to me, but to them also who love his coming” (4:1-8).

Comments:
Since the description of the conversion of St. Paul on his way to Damascus has been commented on several times among us, it seems appropriate to analyze the recommendations he left to St. Timothy, transcribed in these excerpts of the selection. It is not about his conversion properly speaking, but rather the last testament he left when he felt death was drawing near. In a certain way, it is the best fruit of his conversion.

These words in the Epistle to Timothy have the gravity of the words of a testament, of the last words of a master to his beloved disciple when he envisages that he will be leaving this life soon. What are the counsels he gives to his disciples?

St. Paul was warning Timothy about the coming heresies that would erupt inside the Church. Indeed, already in the times of the Catacombs, heresies were circulating inside the Church. But he was also foreseeing the future of the Church until the time of the Antichrist. Therefore, the counsels he gave were not just for Timothy. All the times similar to that beginning and similar to the end time were included in his description.

He alluded to a time to come when many people will no longer maintain the true doctrine but will surround themselves with masters who will say the comfortable things they want to hear. This happens to be our time more than any other before.

Today innumerable people do not want to hear true, orthodox Catholic doctrine, but rather listen to masters who give them what they want. For example, a person might say: “I want a relaxed Catholic Morals so I can live an easier life. Therefore, I will not listen to the Catholics who teach Morals as it is, but will listen to those theologians who teach Morals as I would like it to be.”

St. Paul said: They “will turn away indeed their hearing from the truth, but will be turned to fables.” This is like it is in today’s Church. We have all kinds of errors and false doctrines - fables ” that circulate to gratify men’s depraved instincts and vices. There are countless persons who believe these errors just because they please them.

What is the first counsel St. Paul gave to face this situation? He ordered: “Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned.” That is, you must persevere in the Faith, in that Faith you learned from tradition because you know who taught it. It was St. Paul, an upright man who reliably transmitted to Timothy the true Faith. Therefore, his first recommendation for remaining faithful was to follow what had been taught by trustworthy sources. It is an attitude of docility toward the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church.

We can apply this counsel to our times. The priests from older generations who were worthy heirs of the past Faith transmitted to us teaching that was true. We know the tradition of the Church, and therefore we know what the true Faith is. This well-transmitted tradition gives us conditions to know the truth. The things that the Church taught yesterday cannot have become errors today. What was once true is true forever. Therefore, if some contradiction exists, the error is in the novelty, not in what is established.

So, Catholics who persevere in the Faith are traditionalists who remain faithful to the same Faith of the past.

Then St. Paul gave his second counsel: “I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: Preach the word, be instant in season, out of season, reprove, entreat, rebuke with all patience and doctrine.”

After fidelity to Faith and Tradition, St. Paul, placing himself before Christ, ordered his disciples to preach the word of God. It is a recommendation for priests. We are laymen, and as such we cannot preach the word of God. But we should transmit the word preached by authentic priests, those who are faithful to the past.

After addressing how Timothy himself should remain faithful, St. Paul looked toward others. He must spread the good word. How should he do it? He said: “Be instant in season, out of season.” This means: “You must insistently preach the word whether people like or dislike it.” It is a way to say: “Be a man, be a fighter. You must enter the combat. You must spread the word every way you can as a soldier of Jesus Christ.”

This is what St. Paul recommended; this is what we must do. We must be not afraid of spreading the truth. We must never retreat; we must not be upset if people pay no attention or even if they react badly. We must teach the same thing again and again with supernatural virility. This is our duty and our way to give glory to God.

Then he ordered: “Reprove, entreat, rebuke with all patience and doctrine.” There is a certain school of apostolate that pretends that one should never reprove others but should always be gentle and amiable. The prophet Nathan was not of this school since he reproved David. St. John the Baptist did not belong to it either, for he reproved Herod. This is the way the true Catholic acts.

“Entreat, rebuke, with all patience and doctrine.” To reprove is not enough, it is necessary to entreat. When the sinner is hardened in his fault, he should be reproved; but when he is repentant we must act with goodness and implore him to leave his error and practice virtue. We must be humble and, like a beggar, beseech him. It is the moment for fraternal affection and charity.

We must also be patient in our counsels. When the offender is ashamed of his sin, we should never give him the impression that he is a bother to us, that we are tired of him. We should show him all the patience possible. But also, we should give him good doctrinal guidance. We should offer good counsel based on serious arguments in order to enlighten his intelligence and move his will.

In these few paragraphs St. Paul gave a full doctrinal lesson on how to be faithful and how to do apostolate.

His advice is comforting for us because it is the way that we as Catholics are living today. From the far distance of past centuries, the voice of St. Paul speaking to St. Timothy comes to us as if he were saying: “My sons, you are on the right path. Count on my prayers and protection from Heaven.”

We ask him that in point of fact he bless us and give us the fullness of his spirit.

Blessed Manuel Domingo y Sol was a Spanish Roman Catholic priest and the founder of the Pontifical Spanish College in Rome and the religious order known as the Diocesan Labour Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (1883). As a new priest, he had built a sports arena and a theater to provide a place for adolescents to engage in sports activities and to act.

His beatification cause started under Pope Pius XII in 1946 and he was titled as a Servant of God while Pope Paul VI later titled him as Venerable in 1970 upon the confirmation of his heroic virtue; Pope John Paul II beatified the late priest on 29 March 1987 in Saint Peter's Square.

Roman martyrology:
In the city of Tortosa in Spain, Blessed Manuel Domingo y Sol, Priest, who instituted the Society Laborer Priests, to foster priestly vocations (1909).

The first to conceive of a Spanish College in Rome was Pius IX, a pope particularly sensitive to the presence of foreign seminarians to nurture in the shadow of St Peter’s. During his pontificate, in fact, the Latin American College and the French Seminary were founded. But, unfortunately, it did not go well for the Spanish bishops.

As soon as Leo XIII was elected pope the matter was back on the agenda. Not least because the news from Madrid was not reassuring: “The decadence of the clergy in Spain is growing palpable... A clergy of questionable conduct, negligence, and ignorance... The solution can only come from Rome, through a national college under the supervision of the Roman Pontiff”. The words are those of Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro, apostolic nuncio to Madrid, on 15 June 1885.

During those same years, Father Manuel Domingo y Sol was working in Spain, together with his priests, for the same goal. After founding a number of seminaries in his country, all named after St Joseph, the priest born in Tortosa, in the diocese of Tarragona, became ever more convinced of the need to found one in Rome. Only by studying at the Gregorian could the most promising candidates for the priesthood acquire a certain level of theological training. Unfortunately, despite letters, appeals, and pleas of every kind to his episcopate, Mosén Sol obtained no more than an indifferent response.

The story suddenly changed when the priest met by pure chance in Rome, near Piazza Navona, a young fellow countryman, a monsignor. The young man was Rafael Merry del Val, a scion of one of the noblest families of Europe. A polyglot, son of an ambassador, at home in the most exclusive salons of every capital of Europe, he had just been appointed the president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Piazza Della Minerva. Merry del Val also enjoyed the respect of the Pope, who had already entrusted him with important missions in England, Canada, and the United States. And, just to complete the picture, he also frequented the Spanish court.

In short, the right person at the right time. Taking account of Domingo y Sol’s vain strivings, Merry del Val, decided to help him. He opened one door after another to him and finally set going, once and for all, the matter of the College of Rome, to the great satisfaction of Leo XIII as to how things had been resolved. All “Reverend Sun” then had to do was find a home. And so, on 1 April 1892, taken by historians as the foundation day of the San José, the tenacious priest lodged the first eleven seminarians in Via Giulia, in a room adjoining the national church of Spain. A few months later, there were already forty-two of them and, a year later, the Spanish colony moved to the first floor of Palazzo Altieri, in Piazza del Gesù, through the efforts of Leo XIII, who offered to pay the rent.

For Domingo y Sol, however, the problems were not yet over. There were some in the Spanish episcopate who tried to put a spoke in the wheel whenever they could: they preferred keeping their seminarians in Spanish universities, especially at Salamanca. Their main fear was that the young Spaniards would become too “Romanized”. In addition, the bishops proved indifferent to the Pope’s precise request to loosen their purse strings to help the seminarians financially.

Leo XIII, meanwhile, had found a permanent home for the San José, granting the usufruct of Palazzo Altemps, an ancient and beautiful building on the Sant’Apollinare square, near Piazza Navona. The grant was made official on 25 October 1893 with the letter Non-mediocre Cura, which stated, inter alia, that the direction of the College was entrusted to the priests of Father Manuel Domingo y Sol.

Over time, slowly, things began to move increasingly in the right direction. Meanwhile, along with seminarians from all the dioceses of Spain, bursaries had also arrived. And with the papacy of Pius X, through the good offices of Merry del Val, by then-Secretary of State, the title of “Pontifical” was also bestowed on the college.

A few years later, the bishops began to send priests, as well as seminarians. So much so that, because of its smallness, the situation in Palazzo Altemps was becoming more unmanageable by the day. In the years 1955-56, there were about 135 priests and seminarians quartered there. It was also a consequence of what was happening in Spain, where, between 1934 and 1952, the number of seminarians had increased from 7,516 to 18,536.

The moment for change had arrived. What was needed was a brand new college, this time owned by the Spanish bishops. Not least because, sooner or later, Palazzo Altemps would have to return into the hands of the Holy See. “If the first college was a gift from the Pope to Spain, the second will be a gift from Spain to the Pope”, said the cardinal primate of Spain, Archbishop of Toledo Enrique Plá y Daniel.

To find funds for the purchase of the land and the building of the College, a huge collection was made in every diocese of Spain on 13 May 1956. Soon after a plot was purchased, 220 thousand square meters at Villa Carpegna, a tract of Mediterranean shrub not far from the Vatican. And on October 12 of that year, the feast of Our Lady of Pilar, the first stone, previously blessed by Pope Pius XII, was laid: a piece of marble taken from the monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Cerro de Los Angeles in Getafe, near Madrid.

On 13 June 1961, the building was finally ready. Its first residents were seminarians; the priests were to remain at Palazzo Altemps until 1970.

The official inauguration took place on 13 November 1965, in the presence of Paul VI. A pope immediately loved by the students of San José for the visit he paid, on the very day after his election, to Palazzo Altemps to visit the elderly and sick Cardinal Enrique Plá y Daniel. That evening the crowd of Romans who flocked to Piazza Sant’Apollinare caused fears for the Pope’s safety.

John Paul II was to cross the threshold of Via di Torre Rossa twice, on 29 October 1987 and 28 March 1992. It was to be Pope John Paul II who beatified Father Manuel Domingo y Sol.

Thanks to him, 3,400 young men have enjoyed the privilege of studying close to the Pope. From among them, 120 have been appointed bishops, 8 created cardinals.

Francis de Sales was a Bishop of Geneva and is honored as a saint in the Catholic Church. He became noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation. He is known also for his writings on the topic of spiritual direction and spiritual formation, particularly the Introduction to the Devout Life and the Treatise on the Love of God.

Francis was born on 21 August 1567 in the family castle of Sales, in Thorens in the duchy of upper Savoy. He was the firstborn child of Francis and Frances De Boisy. His father was forty-four, and his mother fifteen. There were twelve children born to the family, five of whom died soon after their birth.  Francis' studies were lengthy and were accomplished in three stages: college studies at la Roche and Annecy (where his priestly vocation was born); then at the Jesuit college in Paris; and finally at Padua, wherein 1591 he obtained his doctorate in civil and canon law. During these years he also studied theology.

He was a gifted young man: of brilliant intellect, persevering, purposeful, serene, affable, irresistibly charming, and above all, consumed with the love of God.

Francis the priest: pastor and missionary:
Our studious young man showed no interest in the prestigious betrothal and political office offered to him, and thus dismayed his father who had nursed visions of social grandeur for his firstborn.
He was appointed to the chair of the Annecy cathedral chapter and was ordained a priest on 18 December 1593. His early years of priesthood in the Calvinistic district of Chablais were largely colored, perforce, by extraordinary missionary controversy. He preached with courage, and his technique of patient dialogue and prayer was to prove a determining factor in the return of Thonon and Chablais to the Catholic faith.

His bishop sent him to Rome on diocesan business, and on 24 March 1599, he was appointed coadjutor bishop at the age of thirty-one. In 1602 he journeyed to Paris to organize the restoration of Catholic worship in the Gex area, part of his diocese and now reverted to French jurisdiction. Francis accomplished this task in nine months.

Francis, Prince-bishop of Geneva:
Francis was ordained bishop on 8 December 1602 and became the good shepherd amongst his people. He was tireless in visiting his 450 parishes; he organized the further formation of his clergy, proclaiming that learning was the eighth sacrament for a priest. He concerned himself with the reform of monasteries, and the catechesis of the young. He spent hours in the confessional, dialogued with the Calvinists, preached the Advent and Lenten homilies in many cities in Savoy and France, undertook spiritual direction both viva voce and in correspondence, took part in theological discussions, and with his friend Senator Antonio Favre founded the Florimontane Academy; and in the midst of this multitude of activities, he found time to publish in 1608 his Introduction to the devout Life (Philothea) and in 1616 his Treatise on the Love of God (Theotimus).

Francis, founder of the Visitation Congregation:
At Dijon in 1604, he met the Baroness Jane Frémyot de Chantal, aged thirty-two, and a widow with four children. Between these two saintly people there developed a strong spiritual friendship. In 1607 Francis suggested to her an important project: the founding of new kind of Order of Contemplative Sisters that would include the care of girls and widows, and be permitted to leave the convent to visit the sick and the poor. The Order was founded on 6 June 1610; but in 1618 the very strict canonical rulings of the day were insisted on by the Primate of France, Denis Marquemont, and all aspects of the external apostolate were suppressed.

Final journeys:
Duke Charles Emanuel I of Savoy sent Francis to Paris to press for the marriage of the hereditary prince Victor Amadeus with Christine of France, the sister of the young King Louis XIII. Francis spent some ten months in the Capital. Despite being assailed by a mess of intrigues he engaged in an intense missionary program: tireless preaching, meetings with Vincent de Paul, Mother Angelica Arnaud, and Richelieu. He also founded a convent of his Visitation nuns and declined to become the coadjutor of the Cardinal Archbishop.

In 1622 he was obliged to undertake another painful journey: to go to Avignon to the members of the royal family of France, and accompany them via Rodano to Lyons. He was a guest at the Bellecour convent of the Visitation Sisters at Lyons and there met the Reverend Mother Jane de Chantal for the last time. Francis died of a stroke on 28 December 1622.  His funeral was solemnized at Annecy on 24 January following, and his remains transferred to the Visitation Convent.

Francis was canonized on 19 April 1665 by Alexander VII; many years later in 1877, Pius IX declared him a Doctor of the Church, the first French-speaking member of that august assembly.  Such is the resumé of the life of our patron, a life full of extraordinary splendor and benevolence. In the following pages, we shall endeavor to present the principal features of this remarkable saint and seek to understand why Don Bosco was inspired to choose him as our model and protector.

Along the path of communion with God:
It would take too long to describe in these few pages how Francis would have the Christian seek to achieve true union with God - and the various forms and stages involved therein. Francis de Sales adapts the biblical and traditional symbolism of conjugal love and comments on the Canticle of Canticles. He rejects out of hand the belief that life is merely a mechanical habit and that a juridical approach is all that matters. Christian living is primarily a personal matter, a life of private and intimate relationships between the believer and his God. That is exactly what devotion (or the devout life) is. The wilted spirituality of so many Christians stems from the fact that they have been taught to adhere only to doctrine and morality, and not primarily to a mystique. We need to love the Supreme and Infinite Love, to dialogue with God in wonderment that is forever new.

The course mapped out by Francis is initially the way of love, respect, admiration for the divine perfections: Our Father who art in heaven... Then follows the love of benevolence, that is, the `love of goodness', the desire that hallowed be his name, that his kingdom will come. Finally, we learn to love, submit to and obey his laws, to desire that his will be done and to fulfill that will in our own lives. Then comes the perfection of love, the sign par excellence of its authenticity: to yield to God, to seek only his will, to submit to it and carry it out. This is the love that transforms. When we love what God loves, and will what he wills, we are then ready to declare - It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

The heart that loves God loves him totally and always:
The mystique of Francis de Sales, as already mentioned, is essentially a mystique of Christian activity, of Christian living. The heart is the actual person making private and profound choices. If the heart chooses God and lives united to one, love will of necessity permeate one's whole being and enliven its manifold richness; and all one's practical living will be imbued with the supernatural.  In particular, Francis exalted human sensitivity. Left to its own resources it is in danger, but in expressing true love it becomes invaluable. Rev Mother de Chantal wrote, `He was not exempt from sentiment and the emotions of passion, nor was it his wish to be so'.9 Indeed he wrote of himself that he was most tender-hearted and that no one `loved more cordially, compassionately, affectionately' than he; indeed God had made him so.

He adds that charity does not arouse all the other virtues in the same way. It prefers some of them, in which it manifests itself more explicitly. Hence we have the procession of Gospel virtues about which he has written unforgettable pages, referring to them as ‘virtues that must enrich with their qualities the acts of all the other virtues'. We must prefer the virtues that fit in best with our personal situation and the duties of our state of life, `the better ones, not the most noticeable ones'11: humility, `awareness of our deficiencies and frailties'; and to this virtue, he dedicated four chapters of his Philothea,- gentleness, which is humility towards our neighbor and the flower of fraternal charity, and simplicity; and then the `important virtues' of obedience, chastity, and poverty. The love of God lifts the human heart into the realm of a living and active faith. In the diversity of situations and virtues, we need to guard this love carefully, to preserve it and perfect it, for it is love that guarantees the true value of our actions. This is the important principle of the uprightness of our aspirations, the purification of our intentions. Francis tells us that `we do not generate and achieve perfection by means of a multiplicity of efforts; rather what matters is the perfection and purity of the intention we have when we carry them out'.

Francis goes on to tell us: `We do not always have to cope with important things in our lives; but we always have the ability to carry out our small duties extraordinarily well - that is, with great love. Let us recall the holy man who, for the love of God, slakes the thirst of a poor and thirsty wayfarer with a glass of water. It is a very small thing that he does - or so it seems! But the intention, the kindness, the love that animates his action changes that simple glass of water into the water of life - and life eternal'. `To suffer a rebuke with two grams of love is far more meritorious than to suffer martyrdom with only one gram of love.'

The loving heart accepts death and life in Christ:
One further thought. It is easy to see that this teaching, though seemingly lofty and grand, does not in any way repudiate what the Gospel demands. On the contrary. We have only to recall the smiling, appealing, joyous demeanor of the Saints. They chose to lead a stricter life than others, and their very freedom showed clearly that they had assuredly mastered their human weaknesses. It is plain that we should have confidence in those who are holy and joyous since the love they preach leads to greater sacrifices. To love is to renounce oneself, and total renunciation of self demands total love.

It is worth noting that one of the books that St Francis de Sales held in special esteem was the Spiritual Combat by Lorenzo Scupoli. Francis knew that strife is part of life, but he renewed ‘religious spirit' by transferring austerity from external religious observance to interior religious observance. In his own words: ‘We must discipline our hearts, not our bodies'. Francis would have us eliminate all self-seeking. In a particular manner, we must cultivate fidelity to prayer, frequent confession, and make a constant effort to be vigilant with ourselves and our intentions. Then he surprises us even further: to achieve such courage it is sufficient to love and desire to love ever more and more.

The spiritual life is nourished by fixing our eyes on him who loves us, on Jesus crucified. The hallowed humanism of Francis de Sales is fundamentally a Christ-centered humanism, with Jesus the Man-God in our sights, the perfect man and the true God, an aspect that the French school was to emphasize so enthusiastically. Francis shared St Bonaventure's thinking on the reason for the Incarnation: God sent his Son not only to expiate sin, but first of all to possess a creature who could be totally loved, and from whom he could receive love in its totality. Francis maintained that God created angels and humans `as though to keep company with his own Son', creation's first-born, with the basic task of loving and praising the Father of heaven.

The whole devout life draws its inspiration from a deep personal love for Jesus Christ. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. Francis often repeated this expression of love and commented on it at length in his writings and discourses. He maintained that we should not only contemplate Jesus as the perfect model and strive to resemble him in an external manner; for more than a model, Jesus is our living principle and origin.

Christianity is the act par excellence of putting on Christ 18 through the grace of the Holy Spirit. And if the totality of man is his heart created for God, then the totality of Jesus Christ is his pierced Heart from which issues the blood of our redemption and the living water of life eternal. We need not marvel, then, that the great devotion to the Heart of Jesus was renewed in the Church in a monastery of one of the Daughters of St Francis de Sales at Paray-le-Monial, St Margaret Mary Alacoque. The founder of her Congregation had prepared the ground.

(Our Lady of Good Deliverance)

(Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary)

† St. Babylas of Antioch † (January 24)

† Saint of the Day †
(January 24)

✠ St. Babylas of Antioch ✠

Bishop/ Patriarch of Antioch:

Born: Unknown

Died: 253 AD

Venerated in:
Catholic Church
Eastern Orthodox Church

Major shrine: Cremona

Feast Day: January 24

Saint Babylas was a patriarch of Antioch, who died in prison during the Decian persecution. In the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches of the Byzantine rite, his feast day is September 4, in the Roman Rite, January 24. He has the distinction of being the first saint recorded as having had his remains moved or "translated" for religious purposes; a practice that was to become extremely common in later centuries.

St. Babylas lived in the third century. He was Bishop of Antioch and much loved by the people. One day the pagan Emperor Numerian ordered that a young girl be sacrificed to the idols. She was the daughter of a king and had been taken as hostage in a war. After this crime, he went to enter the Cathedral of Antioch to mock the Catholics. He was met at the door, however, by St. Babylas, who told him: “Step back, impure and sacrilegious man. You shall not enter here.” A great hatred for the Prelate filled Numerian.

Later, he arrested the Bishop with three of his disciples to submit them to interrogations at which he was present. During one of them he ridiculed the saint saying: “By the gods, I suppose that you must teach interesting things to the fools of whom you are the master since you have a school.”

The Prelate replied: “Yes, I teach wisdom and truth to children. As for the fools, they do not attend my school; otherwise, you would be there.”

After torturing the disciples of St. Babylas, the Emperor went to him, saying:

“Listen to me, o master who teaches such stupidities to children. This time you have lost, for your three students have just finished offering sacrifices to the gods.”

The man of God fixed his severe glance on him and responded:

“You lie, shameless man. You do this naturally since you are the son of the Devil, the liar par excellence.”

The Emperor condemned him to die. As he was being led away, he exhorted the people saying: “Around my neck is a collar of iron and chains. I solemnly exhort you in the name of God to bury them close to my body, for one day they will give testimony against this tyrant whom the eternal fire awaits.” After his death St. Babylas was much venerated in the East and many churches were dedicated to him.

In 363 Emperor Julian, the Apostate visited Antioch to offer sacrifices to Apollo, whose temple he found abandoned. He asked an old pagan why this was so, and the man responded that Apollo no longer gave prophecies there because he was disturbed by the presence in that city of the remains of one man. It was St. Babylas.

Julian wanted to take the relics of the saint and send them away. But all the inhabitants of the city came in procession in defense of their former Bishop singing:

“Let them be all confounded that adore graven things and that glory in their idols. Adore Him, all you are His angels. People, bend thy knees before the most high Lord over all the earth. He is exalted exceedingly above all gods.”

Julian’s plan was frustrated, and the relics of St. Babylas remained in the city.

Comments:
It is interesting to see that the physiognomy of this martyr is quite different from what is normally presented to us by a certain Romantic school of hagiography. This school pictures the martyr always forgiving those who are inflicting death on him. This is legitimate, of course. It is very noble and beautiful that the martyr at the moment he is delivering his life to God, cuts himself off from the world around him, even his persecutors, and thinks exclusively of God. It is noble of him to forgive and pray for those who are against him. Our Lord Himself prayed for the good thief and forgave those who inflicted death on him. But what is wrong in this school is to imply that if a saint died cursing his enemies and condemning the crimes of his adversaries, he would not be a true saint. He would not have practiced the virtue of forgiveness and the virtue of love of neighbor. So he would not deserve to go straight to Heaven. One can see an implicit censure of the action of St. Babylas, who did this, in the fact that his life is not well known, and pictures or statues of him are not disseminated.

This implicit censure, however, contains a doctrinal error. It is perfectly legitimate, and in some cases, even a duty, to die speaking the truth and denouncing the error of the enemies. The life and death of St. Babylas are important proofs of this. It is an eminent form of sanctity to damage the enemies of the Church and frighten the devils even after death.

There are two grandiose scenes in this description of St. Babylas’ life.

First, the encounter at the Cathedral door. One can imagine, on one hand, the Saint stands at the door, stern and indignant. He already knows about the crime of the Emperor, and firm and tranquil, he waits there. On the other hand, there is the Emperor, who approaches the Cathedral surrounded by sycophant courtesans. The Emperor mocks the Catholics and all the courtesans are laughing loudly. The Emperor is the highest authority on earth, and St. Babylas is a simple Bishop. But Babylas is more than Numerian because he is a saint. The Emperor wants to enter, the saint forbids him, and the Emperor is stopped. What did he have that made him able to forbid the Emperor to enter? He had a thing that is much forgotten today, it is moral strength. His presence, his faith, his self-assurance stopped the Emperor from making the blasphemy he had planned.

The second scene is after his death. The devil worshipped under the name of Apollo could not communicate with his followers any longer because that same moral presence of St. Babylas which had prevented the Emperor Numerian from entering the Cathedral was still present throughout the city of Antioch, not allowing the devil to give oracles. Now, another Emperor, Julian the Apostate, was rendered powerless before St. Babylas.

The personality of St. Babylas was so great that both in his lifetime and after his death he was able to overwhelm the most powerful men on earth, as well as the devil in Hell.

Let us ask St. Babylas to give us confidence and faith so that by our presence we can prevent the enemies of the Church from carrying out their blasphemous and idolatrous intents.
